A Bit of History

First Sire                                                                           Son of Smokes Crystal River

We, of BeaverCreek Buckskins, have always had a love of horses, particularly those of the dun family. both sides of the family have been involved in the raising and using of good horses.

Marilyn's  grandfather, Edward Everett Dawes raised and sold race horses on his Kansas homestead. Marilyn's mother remembers tearfully, the banker coming and leading away, all the horses when her father died. Marilyn's oldest brother made money while in high school by riding "green" horses 14 miles, to Greeley, Colorado, where they were sold as "broke" horses. I'm sure that was an interesting journey!

My grandfather, Phillip, was well known  in Oklahoma Territory, for his famous stallion, Billy Sunday. People came from far and wide to bring mares to this beautiful Percheron stallion. Grandpa Phillip acquired his homestead in the April 22, 1889 land rush on the Cherokee Strip. The selling of horses, and unfortunately the homestead itself, came to an end with the discovery of black gold, Texas Tea or just plain oil!

My mother's parents were Colorado homesteaders, coming to the high plains by covered wagon. they settled east of Denver, where my grandmother was intimidated by wandering Arapahoe tribesmen, looking for a hand out. All the food that the family ate, not raised by themselves, was hauled by horse and buggy, from Denver, each fall.

Our kids, Dawne and Doug, have kept the love of horses, and the using of them. Doug rode bareback horses and bulls in Little Britches Rodeo. Dawne rode barrels and poles in Little Britches rodeo. Today, both are involved in the operation of BeaverCreek Buckskins, and their kids are riding and helping with the operation.

Marilyn and I opened a horse boarding facility, in Green Mountain Falls, Colorado, in 1982. We boarded as many as 42 horses, winter and summer, but our love was raising and breeding dun quarter horses. BeaverCreek Buckskins came about because we owned a black Easy Jet mare. That mare was one of the best horses we had owned, leading me to say that if I could find a buckskin stud colt that was bred that way, I'd buy him in a heart beat! We were sent to see a scrawny, ugly duckling, 14 month old dun Jet Deck bred horse. We bought him and the rest is history. Smokes Crystal River became our first stallion, and we showed him to many reining championships before his untimely death. His loss still leaves a big hole in our hearts. We kept his second son, Crystal Star Bukaroo, to replace him. Unfortunately, we lost him in the same way as his sire. We had to give up on that particular line.

BeaverCreek Buckskins and all horses are a division of Ram /Jac, Inc. We are all involved in the operation of BeaverCreek Buckskins, and are affiliated with several horse organizations.

Thank you for viewing our site, and would be happy to "talk horses"  with you. Please feel free to visit with us about the horses, or stop by!
